We are sad to see summer come to a close, but look forward to spending time outdoors in the fall hiking the beautiful trails of New England and wherever life takes us! While we pack our backpacks full of everything we need to stay hydrated and energized, we don’t want to forget about the adult-stage deer ticks that become active every year in the fall months.
In addition to your favorite gear, here are some pointers to keep in mind before you hit the trail:
- Stay centered. As much as it can be fun exploring off the trail, this is often where ticks wait for a host to walk by. Stay in the center of the trail as much as possible in order to avoid those pesky ticks.
- Carry a tick key or tick removal tool with you on the trail. If you spot a tick on your on your pet, you can safely remove it immediately.
- Wear light colors. Dark colors make it difficult to see ticks that may be crawling on you. Lighter colored clothing will make it easier to spot the ticks before they bite.
- Apply a natural repellent to your skin and clothing. There are many safe, all-natural products that deter ticks and do not have the harmful chemicals like DEET and Permethrin. Applying a repellent to yourself will be one extra layer of protection from tick-bites while you’re enjoying the outdoors.
Why treat your lawn in the fall to eliminate ticks?
In addition to protecting yourself while you’re out in the woods, you also want to be sure that you and your family are safe at home. Fall tick property treatments not only eliminate adult deer ticks that are looking for a host, but also prevent them from laying eggs in the spring.
When you get home from time outdoors and after you do a thorough tick check, throw your clothing in the dryer on high for 15 minutes. The process will kill any ticks that may have been carried inside on your clothing.
